HYPGEOM.DIST (SampleSuccessCount, SampleSize, PopulationSuccessCount, PopulationSize, IsCumulative) HYPGEOM.DIST (SampleSuccessCount; SampleSize; PopulationSuccessCount; PopulationSize; IsCumulative)

SampleSuccessCount

Number Number

The number of successes in the sample.

SampleSize

Number Number

The size of the sample.

PopulationSuccessCount

Number Number

The number of successes in the population.

PopulationSize

Number Number

The population size.

IsCumulative

Logical Logical

TRUE to return the probability that a value is at most the value of the SampleSuccessCount parameter (the cumulative distribution function). FALSE to return the probability of exactly that value (the probability mass function).

Returns

Number Number

A value for a hypergeometric distribution.

Returns a probability for the hypergeometric distribution. This distribution models drawing items from a finite population without replacement, unlike the binomial distribution which assumes replacement (or equivalently, independent trials).

Example

HYPGEOM.DIST (3, 5, 13, 52, FALSE)
HYPGEOM.DIST (3; 5; 13; 52; FALSE)

Returns roughly 0.0815. Consider a standard deck of 52 cards containing 13 hearts. If you draw 5 cards without replacement, the probability of getting exactly 3 hearts is roughly 8.15%.
