TOTEXT (Value, Locale?) TOTEXT (Value; Locale?)

Value

The value to convert.

Locale

Locale Locale (optional)

The locale to use when doing the conversion.

A locale represents a language and possibly a region. If omitted, the configured locale is used.

Use a value such as Locale.EnglishLocale,English to provide a locale (the full list is below). If your chosen locale is not part of the list, use the LOCALE function instead.

All locales may not be available. If a locale is not available, a fallback locale can be used. To provide such fallback locales, use the LOCALE function.

The LOCALE function accepts so-called Unicode Locale Identifiers. Every value in the list below corresponds to such an identifier.

Returns

Text Text

A string corresponding to the given value.

Returns the given value converted to a text string. TOTEXT (42) TOTEXT (42) returns "42".

When the sole parameter is a text string, it is returned unchanged. When it is a logical value, FALSE is converted to "FALSE" and TRUE is converted to "TRUE".

The configured locale is taken into account when converting numbers, meaning that if said locale is German, a decimal comma (",") is used as a decimal separator. If said locale is Australian English, a decimal point (".") is used. Thousands separators are not used and negative numbers use a leading minus sign ("-"). The digits used are always Western digits (0 through 9). The result, in other words, is such that it can be parsed by the TONUMBER function. Use FORMAT instead for more options, including support for thousands separators and localized digits.

The configured locale is also taken into account when converting temporal values, and both the date and the time of day are included. Use FORMAT.DATE instead to convert only the date, FORMAT.TIME to convert only the time of day and FORMAT.DATETIME for control over the format used for both.

When the value is a color, a hex string is used, of the type also used by Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) (and which can be parsed by the COLOR and TOCOLOR functions). For instance, TOTEXT (Color.Red) TOTEXT (Color,Red) is converted to "#ff0000". If the color is not fully opaque (that is, if the color is partly transparent), an additional two characters are used to convey the alpha value of the color. For more details, refer to the COLOR function and its section on "hex notation."

This function is not commonly supported by spreadsheets.

Examples

TOTEXT (42.1)
TOTEXT (42,1)

Returns "42.1", if the decimal separator of the configured locale is a decimal point and "42,1", if the decimal separator is a decimal comma.

TOTEXT (6.82E-7)
TOTEXT (6,82E-7)

Returns "6.82e-7", if the decimal separator of the configured locale is a decimal point and "6,82e-7", if the decimal separator is a decimal comma. ("e" means "to the power of ten," meaning that 6.82e-7 is equal to 6.82 * POWER (10, - 7)6,82 * POWER (10; - 7).

TOTEXT (FALSE)
TOTEXT (FALSE)

Returns "FALSE".

TOTEXT (TRUE)
TOTEXT (TRUE)

Returns "TRUE".

TOTEXT (Color.Red)
TOTEXT (Color,Red)

Returns "#ff0000".

TOTEXT ( COLOR ("rgba(255, 0, 0, 0.5)"))

Returns "#ff000080".
